A bedroom can have thick curtains and still have a bright stripe beside the pillow at sunrise. In a living room, a less opaque fabric may control the television glare perfectly well. These are different jobs, and neither is solved by ordering whatever product photograph looks darkest.
This guide separates fabric opacity from the performance of the installed window covering. It uses current IKEA US product specifications as concrete examples, checked on October 19, 2026, alongside our own measurement calculations and purchasing judgments. We have not tested these curtains, and a manufacturer's blackout description is not a promise that any installation will make an entire room completely dark.
Choose the required fabric opacity first, then calculate enough fabric for the actual rod or track span. Side, top and center gaps can defeat a blackout panel, while the wrong hanging method or wash routine can make an otherwise suitable purchase inconvenient.
Start with the reason you need less light
For daytime sleep or a streetlight directly outside a bedroom, shortlist fabric labeled blackout and inspect all the possible routes around it. For a living room where you want to reduce glare but retain a little daylight, room-darkening fabric may be enough. If daytime privacy with visible light is the real aim, neither should be purchased without considering a separate lighter layer.
Before replacing anything, close your existing covering during the actual problem period. Look at the fabric, center join, sides, top and lower edge separately. A glowing fabric panel suggests an opacity issue; a bright line around an opaque panel suggests a coverage or hanging issue. This simple observation can prevent paying for heavier fabric when a better-fitted system would address the problem.
Do not infer soundproofing, a particular temperature reduction or energy savings from thickness or the word blackout. Those outcomes require their own evidence and depend on the room. Here, the decision is about useful light control, fit and everyday care.
Compare these dimensions before comparing colors
Think of the purchase as fabric plus an installation plus a maintenance routine. All three must fit. A panel that is excellent at blocking light through its surface can still hang too far from the wall. A generous width can still be awkward if it cannot pass a center bracket or if there is nowhere for the open curtain to gather.

| Comparison dimension | What to check | Reason to reject a candidate |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric opacity | Blackout versus room-darkening specification for the exact variant | Room-darkening is offered when you need the most opaque fabric |
| Side and top coverage | Rod or track position, returns and distance from the wall | Bright edge paths remain despite adequate fabric opacity |
| Usable closed width | Rod span, desired fullness, center overlap and panel width | Panels must be stretched flat merely to meet |
| Finished drop | Actual hanging point to intended lower edge | Available length cannot cover the opening after the chosen hooks or rings are fitted |
| Header and hardware | Pocket, tabs, hooks, rings or gliders and their compatibility | Panel cannot slide as intended or hardware cannot support the load |
| Package quantity | Single panel versus pair; width of each piece | Cart contains half the fabric needed |
| Care and alterations | Wash temperature, drying, backing and hemming instructions | Required maintenance or irreversible cutting does not suit your home |
Calculate width from the rod, not the glass
Measure the window frame, then plan the rod or track that will cover it. IKEA's curtain planning guide suggests extending the rod at least 6 inches beyond each side of the window. Treat that as a planning starting point, not a guarantee against every light leak: wall space, stack-back, trim and the particular system still matter. Measure the final usable span once the hardware position is decided.
For a worked example, suppose a frame is 48 inches wide and the planned rod span is 60 inches. At 1.5 times fullness, the target flat fabric width is 90 inches; at twice fullness, it is 120 inches. Two 57-inch panels total 114 inches, giving 1.9 times fullness across that 60-inch span. They exceed the first target but fall short of a strict two-times target. These are arithmetic examples, not a custom fitting recommendation.
IKEA gives a 1.5-times or two-times fullness calculation on the listed product pages. Divide your chosen total fabric target by the width of one panel and round up, then translate that count into packages. Also consider how you will divide panels left and right. A result of three panels is not automatically a balanced pair, and adding another pair changes both cost and the fabric gathered when open.
Three specific curtain options and their limitations
These examples use the exact US colors, sizes and article numbers linked below because care instructions and package quantities can differ. MAJGULL gray 504.178.12 is a blackout pair with 57-by-98-inch panels. BENGTA beige 206.021.37 is one 83-by-98-inch blackout panel with polyurethane backing. VILBORG beige 002.975.53 is a room-darkening pair with 57-by-98-inch panels, not a blackout equivalent.
The suggested fits are our editorial conclusions. Check coverage and hardware first. One broad panel may suit a one-way draw; two may suit a center opening. Room-darkening fabric is a compromise when some transmitted light is acceptable.

| Named example | Specified fabric and quantity | Useful buying scenario | Care or selection drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA MAJGULL gray, 504.178.12 | Blackout; pair; each panel 57×98 inches; polyester | Center-opening bedroom covering with suitable heading-tape hardware | Cold durable-press wash; no tumble drying; stated maximum 4% shrinkage |
| IKEA BENGTA beige, 206.021.37 | Blackout; single 83×98-inch panel; polyester with polyurethane backing | A measured one-way draw where a cut-to-length panel is useful | One piece per pack; cold normal wash, no tumble drying; iron front only on low |
| IKEA VILBORG beige, 002.975.53 | Room-darkening; pair; each panel 57×98 inches; polyester | Living-room glare reduction when some fabric-transmitted light is acceptable | Not a blackout substitute; warm normal wash, no tumble drying; maximum 4% shrinkage |
Check drop, header and the path of the open curtain
Measure vertically from the point where the fabric will actually hang, after accounting for rings, hooks or the rod pocket. Measuring from the ceiling or window frame and then changing the header can produce the wrong drop. If you want a lower edge just above the floor, measure in several places rather than assuming the floor is perfectly level.
The three listed examples have heading tape and allow multiple hanging arrangements according to IKEA. That flexibility still requires the correct compatible hardware, purchased in sufficient quantity. Decide between direct-on-rod hanging and hooks or gliders before finalizing length. Check your existing rod's support requirements and weight rating with its maker; adding extra panels increases the load.
Then act out the daily routine. Will the curtain gather behind furniture, obstruct a window handle or catch on a center support? Can you close the center without pulling the fabric taut? Keep curtains clear of heaters and other equipment in line with their manufacturers' instructions. A visually attractive floor-length arrangement is unsuitable if it blocks something that needs clearance.
Match the shortlist to an actual room
Daytime sleeper with a bright side gap: first plan coverage close enough to the window and wide enough to address that path. Then compare MAJGULL or BENGTA as blackout-fabric candidates. Skip VILBORG if the fabric itself must transmit no daylight. If the room still has bright edges, investigate a compatible fitted shade or revised hardware rather than automatically buying a second heavy curtain layer.
Living room with afternoon screen glare: VILBORG is a reasonable candidate when some soft light is welcome and its stated room-darkening function matches the goal. The drawback is deliberate: it is not the choice for someone requiring the same fabric opacity as the blackout examples. Keep the opened stack away from the screen sightline and the window's operating handle.
Rental with existing hardware: measure and identify that system first. MAJGULL's paired format may be convenient for a center draw, while BENGTA's single-panel format needs a deliberate opening direction and quantity calculation. Skip an option that requires unapproved drilling or incompatible hooks. Avoid permanent cutting until the curtain has been hung, checked and cared for as its label requires.
Budget for care and alterations before committing
The three examples prohibit tumble drying, so plan somewhere to dry a washed panel. Check your washer's capacity guidance. Generous fullness means more material to remove, wash and rehang; the full-window cost includes hardware as well as fabric.
MAJGULL and VILBORG list up to 4% shrinkage. For scale, 4% of a 98-inch length is 3.92 inches; that is maximum-specification arithmetic, not predicted shrinkage. IKEA advises washing MAJGULL before cutting or hemming. BENGTA is specifically cut-to-length without hemming, but its backing has separate ironing instructions. Do not transfer that no-hem method to an ordinary woven curtain.
Before checkout, record the exact variant, number of individual panels, total flat width, intended hanging point, finished drop and necessary hooks or rings. Verify the alteration and return terms before cutting anything. Buy when those details agree; a darker color or a more luxurious photograph cannot make up for missing fabric or the wrong hardware.
Shopping notes
Use these options as a starting point, then check dimensions, current materials, care instructions, availability, and the retailer’s return policy before ordering.

Why is my room bright when the curtains are labeled blackout?
The description can refer to the fabric rather than the complete installation. Check whether light comes through the material or around its top, sides, center and bottom. Fixing an edge gap may be more useful than replacing already opaque fabric.
Does 57×98 inches mean the whole pair is 57 inches wide?
For the MAJGULL and VILBORG variants linked here, the specified 57-inch width is per panel and the package contains a pair. Verify the exact product's measurements and included quantity; BENGTA here is sold as one piece.
Should I buy the exact window width in curtain fabric?
Usually that ignores the wider rod span, folds and overlap you may need. Plan the hardware first and calculate fabric from its usable span and your chosen fullness. Account for the individual panel width and round the quantity up before counting packages.
